That's awesome man - As much as I'd love to do the six speed swap I've got zero tools or space to do it.

I'm certain it isn't a job a regular mechanic would do for pay either - I'm really keen on having it done at some point though- only got belts and bodywork stuff to do before my car is solid for some improvements.

Thanks for the tip on the front spoiler, the black sides level it all out and really compliments the red. Spotted your badge on the back too  ;D

All of these are choice mods - really liking the front skirt and matching sides.

I need a 6 speed in my life, I wouldn't be able to fit it myself though  :'( How does it drive?

I've got to know where is that front skirt from too?

Sounds like you have it covered!  :)

You shouldn't feel disheartened if we're a little thin on the ground - I'm sure we'll pick up loads of new faces as the cars get rarer, specially if you have a good technical wiki.

My improvement suggestion is to make a forum colour scheme in Tropicana  ;D

I'd be happy to get my hands on some official club stickers, if that is something you'd be looking to do at some point!  So I can show off at that Paseo meet we're having...right?

I think honestly all these older cars have a character to them. Sure, at the time they might not of aroused much excitement but now they've survived the test of time they stand out a lot more from normal cars. Specially the lower value cars that sometimes have their own story to tell. I'd take a '97 Corolla over a modern car any day8)

In the UK, in 1996/7 there were quite a strong bunch of coupés on the market. The Ford Puma, Vauxhall Tigra and the Renault Megan. I believe the Paseo wasn't priced particularly competitively and so the faster, more available European makes left it in the dust.

The Paseo was perceived as older technology opposed to the relatively new Puma and the Megan in it's 2 litre configuration was considerably faster. Both the Megan and the Tigra had already had a head-start of several years on the UK market by this point also. Even Peugeot had the 406 and Honda the Civic Coupe new in 1996 and 1997.

Then there's Toyota's image in the late 90's....

All in all it was released far too late to make any dent in the UK market - even the Galliano model wasn't enough to bump sales.

Luckily it sold so poorly that people with our persuasion can pick them up Super Cheap! ;D

Apparently it sold relatively well in the US and East Europe though so congrats!

Edit: In before Galliano comes in this thread and sites all the facts and figures  ;)

I've had both rear shocks replaced this last year when they both failed. It was awful, the car drove straight with rattling but after a few months it developed and under any load on the rear, it would step out of line about a foot. That was fixed with the shocks but the rattling is back with vengeance.

I get knocking a lot but it seems to come and go, sometimes it'll not show up for weeks at a time. This might explain some steering weirdness come to think of it, as if the car is more willing to turn clockwise than anticlockwise.  :(

Is this expensive to replace? Should I lower the car and buy an adjustable pan hard rod? Will my wife believe this is the best course of action?

Would be willing to drive down and take a look, make you a few offers if the car is still about? Unfortunately I wouldn't have anyway of recovering the entire car though.

Hi Guys,

Finally had time to Join up - I've had my Paseo for around 5 months now and I can't see myself getting anything else ever again.

Mine is a modest ST I found for £750 after seeing a couple of absolute sheds for the same price - it has less than 70,000 on the clock and a solid body with only a few little bumps. I've since spent a little keeping it up going well include new exhaust and major service and regular valeting. I've also just bought a set of 14" OEM Toyota Alloys to replace the steelies provided on the poverty trim paseo. Overall a pretty decent example considering it's a daily driver.

Here's a picture of the car when I took delivery:


At the moment I've got a pretty nasty rattle on the rear left strut and I will be looking to replace all four corners with subtly lower struts and springs as well as a less pathetic looking back box and tailpipe. Hopefully given time, money and effort my little Paseo might look as impressive as some of yours do!
